ION Ballistic Boots - long-term test of neoprene boots

ION Ballistic Boots

Long-Term Test of Neoprene Boots

In the fall of 2023, ION introduced the Ballistic Boots, which caught our attention primarily because of their sole construction. The rugged outsole, reinforced with Kevlar, is designed to provide protection against sharp surfaces. We can now supplement the short-term test from fall 2023 with our experiences from the past three years.

The fact that these booties have lasted this long at all - especially with continuous use - is a bit of a surprise. Until now, the sole has usually been the weak point for many manufacturers. Quickly worn-down treads first made the bare soles slippery, and it didn’t take long before the first hole appeared.

And a hole in the sole - aside from the loss of thermal insulation - also lets sand and small stones slip into the shoe on the way to the water.

What kind of use case are we talking about for surf boots? We always use two models: warm 6–7 mm boots in the winter and 3–5 mm boots during the Northern European summer. So far, summer booties have lasted about 1–2 years, while neoprene shoes for the winter have lasted about 2–3 years due to the lower number of surfing days.

The two ION Ballistic models with an internal split (toe separator) in 3/2 and 6/5 neoprene thicknesses were in constant use. These two pairs of surf boots were used for a total of about 50 wing foil and 25 windsurfing sessions per year.

A look at the photos reveals their condition: the sole is intact and still non-slip. On the 3/2 summer model, the foot straps have worn through the thin neoprene across the instep after three years; on the winter booties, the material is intact and the thermal insulation is still top-notch on cold days. The taped seams show signs of wear, but neither the heel tab nor the Velcro closure strap has come off.

Conclusion: The slightly stiffer sole did not detract from the board feel; it provides a secure feeling when running over rough terrain (no penetration by rocks or shell beds) and remains slip-resistant for a very long time, even on EVA pads. Rating: Endurance 'runner' with good thermal performance.
