Backloop Spin
How to change the grip during a backloop spin
This slow-motion video shows a close-up of how the hands perform the grip change on the boom during a backloop spin (also known as a palau).
The grip position of the rear hand is important. Before taking off, this hand must grip the boom with an underhand grip (from below) so that the joints can rotate along with the backloop spin. You can clearly see the sequence of the grip changes in the slow-motion footage.
In this video – filmed at the GWA event on Fuerteventura – Nöe Mercier also grabs from below with his front hand. But that’s just a personal preference; you can start the trick with your front hand in either an underhand or overhand grip.
