Pump Start
Get going quickly
In this video, you can see just how quickly you can get up on the foil by actively pumping. Just a few combined pump strokes with the wing and foil are enough to get the board flying.
If the wind is blowing at the right strength (or you’re using the right wing size), you’ll be back on the foil in no time after a fall. Once both feet are in the footstraps, it only takes about three strokes to get airborne. To do this, you need to coordinate the pumping strokes of your arms with the pumping movements of the board.
Here you can see the pumping technique using a small 720 cm2 foil under the tail of the board, whose volume corresponds exactly to the rider’s body weight. Foot straps help with the pump start, as they provide a better connection to the board, allowing you to apply not only downward pressure but also pressure and pull in other directions.
If you’ve mastered active pumping, you’ll be foiling quickly even on small boards.
