Duotone's Foil Assist System: an e-foil with a battery on the waist belt and a remote control on the wrist

E-Foils from Duotone

Two concepts: Foil Cruise and Foil Assist

Duotone introduces a well-designed range of electric hydrofoils. The e-foils feature two propulsion options (motor mounted at the top or bottom of the mast), allow for use with any board (the battery is worn on a waist belt), and are compatible with fuselages from many other brands.

The latter feature is particularly great, because it allows you to use not only DUOTONE foils, but also – with the right adapter in the mast – all planes (fuselage including front and rear wings) from AFS, AXIS, CODE, F-ONE, GONG, KT, LIFT, NORTH, and SAB, as well as ARMSTRONG with a special fuselage.

If you’re out on the water with these foils, you can now use your setup even in calm conditions – just attach the e-foil mast and let the electric motor shuttle you out to the lineup. So far, so good – but this “taxi service” comes at a price. You’ll need to shell out at least 4,799 euros to use the Foil Assist Set with the aluminum mast. The version with the D/LAB carbon mast costs 5,999 euros.

With the Foil Assist Set, the motor is mounted at the top of the mast, serving as a launch aid, and is deactivated once you’re airborne. This makes it easy to launch from waves; while foiling, the top-mounted motor (whose rotor blades also fold away to a streamlined position) rarely dips into the water. The only ballast is the batteries carried on the waist belt (the unit with batteries weighs a total of approx. 3.76 kg).

The Foil Cruise Set is different. In this setup, the motor is located at the bottom of the mast, serving as a permanent propulsion system for e-foiling. It is designed for cruising and carving in flat water or for training when learning to foil.

The latter, in particular, is perfect for introducing beginners to foiling across all foil sports. Without wind, wind waves, or a wing, foiling can be practiced under controlled conditions, and the transition to wind-powered setups (wing, parawing, windsurf rig) is then just a small step. The Foil Cruise Set is also available with an aluminum mast and costs 4,799 euros.

All sets include the mast with an electric drive, which can be mounted on any foilboard with a double US box; the connecting cable, which runs from the rear of the mast base to the battery worn on the waist belt; and the wrist-mounted remote control with an additional finger switch. The board leash and coiled power cable are combined so that, visually, only a single leash runs from the board to the waist belt.

The package includes two batteries and a charger. With a capacity of 159.6 Wh, the batteries are rated for air travel. You can find more details on this, as well as all other technical specifications and videos, on the website linked below.

Alongside the e-foils, Duotone is also introducing two new board lines: the “Midfish” as a hardboard (38, 48, 58, and 78 liters) and an inflatable version with 115 liters. The boards stand out thanks to their swallowtail, whose shape also helps guide the cable from the hull to the deck.

The products will be available in December. You can find everything about Duotone's e-foil lineup at:
