Open German Wingfoil Freestyle Championship 2026
Benjamin May and Sofia Ginzinger claim the titles
The 2026 German Wingfoil Freestyle Championships were also scheduled to take place over the Pentecost weekend as part of the Foil Festival on Fehmarn. After two days of summer weather, the long-awaited wind finally picked up on the Sunday of the festival, allowing the freestylers to compete in the Open German Championships.
With a cross-offshore wind blowing at between 10 and 17 knots, a small field of competitors in four classes took to the water. Due to the offshore wind, the contest area was set up about 500 meters from the shore – which meant it was out of sight of the spectators on the beach, but at least the races could still be completed.
Benjamin May impressed the judges with his high, clean rotations and beat out his two competitors from Fehmarn, Josh Mayer (2nd place) and Bene Hiss (3rd place), to once again claim the title of German Wingfoil Freestyle Champion.
In the U19 category, Hubert Christahl defeated Franz Rappolder (2nd place) and Leo Frost (3rd place). Theo Buchwald took the win in the U15 category ahead of Jonte Boysen (2nd place) and Tebbe Voget (3rd place), while in the women’s race, Sofia Ginzinger, who traveled from Spain, won ahead of Milla Klimt (2nd place) and Lilou Auth (3rd place).
The DWFV tour continues in June during Kieler Woche with the racing discipline (German Open WingFoil Racing), followed by another racing event in Born. Wave, freestyle, and slalom will then be on the program during the first weekend in August at the Wingfoil Masters on Sylt.
