X-PROJECT 2026
Crossover event for wing foilers, pump foilers and windsurfers
Foiling and windsurfing on two Swiss Alpine lakes – from July 3 to 5, an invitational event took place in the Engadin, where selected riders competed against each other in various surfing disciplines.
Wing foilers, wind foilers, windsurfers and pump foilers were pitted against each other in various competitions and judged by a panel. The challenge: to perform the most difficult tricks in multiple attempts, with only the best run counting toward the final score.
Unfortunately, the Maloja wind wasn't blowing as reliably as usual during this time, so while the pump foilers were able to get out on Lake St. Moritz, the windsurfers had to rely on being towed by a winch.
On the second day of the event, wing foilers and windsurfers (with and without foils) were able to let loose on Lago Bianco under perfect conditions and show off their freestyle tricks against a unique mountain backdrop.
Austrian wing foiler Tomas Acherer, the current tour leader of the GWA Wingfoil Surf-Freestyle World Cup, delivered strong performances both in tow-in conditions on Lake St. Moritz and in strong winds on Lago Bianco, securing the overall title of the X-Project 2026.
Swiss foil pioneer Balz Müller demonstrated his exceptional versatility and secured second place in the overall standings. Two-time European windsurfing freestyle champion Sam Esteve from France took third place.
In the pump foil freestyle competition, three Swiss athletes made it to the podium. Rob von Roll took first place, ahead of Gian Bohlhalder and his younger brother Matheo von Roll.
